Tairua is located at the gateway to the Eastern Sea border of the Coromandel Peninsula, just 2 hours drive from central Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga, making it an ideal holiday getaway. Tairua, meaning “two tides” has the best of both beach genres, the picturesque white sands of Ocean Beach and the tranquil clear shallow waters of the inner harbour beaches.
With a permanent population of about 1500 people, the town is a quiet tranquil retreat in winter and the influx to around 15,000 people over the summer holidays brings a vibrant energetic atmosphere to the town.
Tairua still has a traditional beach feel with some real authentic coastal summer baches, but get amongst the streets and you will see a full portfolio of hillside mansions with their million dollar views. There is something for everyone’s budget here.
Life is simple with just one mini-supermarket, one gas station and a handful of cafes.
